The Chrome offline dinosaur game, recreated from its source

T-Rex Runner

Same speeds, same jump, same gaps, same scoring and night sky as the game hidden in Chrome — with original pixel art. Free, no sign-in, plays in the browser.

Nothing to load. Time to run.

Press Space or ↑ to jump and ↓ to duck. On a phone, tap the dinosaur to jump.

How to play

  1. Start. Press Space or the Up arrow (or tap the dinosaur). The T-Rex jumps in place, the stage opens to its full width and the ground starts to move. Three seconds later the first cactus arrives.
  2. Jump. Space or Up. Holding the key gives the full jump; releasing it once the T-Rex has risen 30 pixels cuts the jump short. Down while in the air drops you three times faster.
  3. Duck. Hold Down to run low under a pterodactyl. You cannot jump while ducking. On a phone, hold the Duck button.
  4. Speed. The run starts at speed 6 and gains 0.001 every frame, up to 13. Cactus groups of two and three appear once the speed allows (4 for small, 7 for large); pterodactyls need 8.5.
  5. Score. One point per 40 pixels of ground. Every 100 points the counter flashes; every 700 points night falls for twelve seconds. HI is your best.
  6. Game over. Enter or a tap restarts at once; Space and Up work again after 1.2 seconds. Tap HI twice to reset the high score.

What is replicated

Additions of this page, not in the original: the course number in the link (the same number replays the same obstacles), the sound, dark-theme and arcade-mode buttons, the hold-to-duck button on touch screens, statistics, the high score kept in this browser, and a paused game surviving a reload. The art and sounds are original; see CREDITS.txt.

Questions

How do I play T-Rex Runner?

Press Space or the Up arrow to start and to jump; press Down to duck, or to drop faster while in the air. On a touch screen, tap the dinosaur to jump and hold the Duck button to duck. Avoid the cacti and pterodactyls; the run ends on the first hit.

How is the score counted?

The score is distance: every 40 pixels of ground scrolled past is one point (0.025 points per pixel), so it climbs faster as the game speeds up from 6 to 13. Every 100 points the digits flash three times and a chime plays. HI shows the best score kept in this browser.

When do the pterodactyls appear and why does it get dark?

Pterodactyls only appear once the speed reaches 8.5 (around 350 to 450 points) and fly at three heights: duck under the middle one, jump the low one, run under the high one. Night falls at every multiple of 700 points, lasts twelve seconds and shows the moon in a new phase each time.

How do I restart after a crash?

Press Enter or tap the game to restart at once; Space and the Up arrow restart after a 1.2 second pause, as in the original, so a mistimed jump does not skip the game-over screen. Tap the HI score twice on the game-over screen to reset it.

What is the number in the link?

The number after the # is this page's course seed: the same number produces the same sequence of cacti, pterodactyls, gaps and clouds, so two people can race the same course. That is an addition of this page; the original game is random every time.

Is this the real Chrome game, and is anything sent anywhere?

It is an independent recreation. The rules and every constant were taken from the Chromium project's open source code, but the artwork, sounds, text and code here are original. It is not affiliated with Google. Your options, high score and statistics stay in this browser; the page makes no network calls of its own.
